Cambridgeshire’s advanced Mechanical Biological Treatment (MBT) facility was
opened recently at Donarbon’s Waste Management Park in Waterbeach. The
MBT plant, which cost just over £41 million to build and equip, is the centrepiece
of the 28-year PFI waste management contract between Cambridgeshire
County Council and Donarbon Ltd, whereby Donarbon will be responsible
for treating the majority of household waste from Cambridgeshire and
ensuring that councils meet their recycling and landfill diversion targets.
The plant will sort materials from black bag waste for recycling and composting,
which will cut the amount of household waste sent to landfill in Cambridgeshire.
But this work has not been as obvious as the new recycling building now
clearly visible from the A10!
Donarbon was part of the Dickerson Group of companies, and in anticipation for its move to new offices in the recycling building, the business has had to separate itself from the Dickerson IT infrastructure and servers, and establish its own new IT system and network, ready to meet the demands of the waste treatment and recycling contract it recently signed with Cambridgeshire County Council.
Kevin Auden, director of 3it, the Bury St. Edmunds-based technology company that installed the new IT system for Donarbon, says: “This is not a ‘geeky’ initiative; having modern IT systems and qualified technical support is a vital part of the development of any flourishing business, and as a locally-based technology provider, we are obviously happy to work with a successful company like Donarbon.
“The work we have done with Donarbon has been extensive and taken nearly a year to complete and has included establishing a completely separate network for the company, installing a new and larger server, configuring all the company’s PCs to a new domain, transferring all of Donarbon’s data to the new server and installing new firewall protection,” he continues.
3it’s solution for Donarbon consisted of:
-
Complete outsourced IT support and consultancy for Donarbon.
-
CCTV solution to monitor both inside and outside the building.
-
New servers and networked attach storage to cope with the additional demands Donarbon now has with its IT infrastructure.
-
Maintaining the old original office and the new office to be operational at the same time. Then move the whole IT infrastructure with minimal disruption to the business.Cat5, Cat6 and fibre structured cabling.
-
Broadband and secure access to the systems from the remote office locations.
-
Telephone system and interactive whiteboards for the Education Centre
As can be seen, 3it is able to offer a complete and diverse IT package to suit businesses of all sizes. Sarah Clover, business development director for Donarbon says: “We came into work Monday morning in our new offices and everything to do with the IT system was working perfectly, which was great news for us and testament to the hard work put in by 3it. The company has been very adaptable, coping with a range of problems, and they continue to give us IT support across the board.”
