Glulam is Resistant

Glulam is naturally resilient to an aggressive chemical environment. This is a substantial reason why swimming baths and warehouses for salt and fertilizer are often made of glulam and assembled with corrosion lasting metalwork and fixings. Galvanized steel is frequently used and stainless steel, when required.

All glulam is bonded with waterproof and weather-resistant glue unless anything else is speicified. If the glulam is protected with a wood preservative combined with a good water-repellent surface treatment, it can be used for outdoor constructions.

Glulam is Fire Resistant

Glulam does not burn very well. Fire in a glulam beam goes out by itself unless the beam is directly exposed to flames. The carbonized layer protects the beam against further destruction from fire.

Glulam constructions can therefore be made extremely fire safe and easily fulfil the standards concerning BD-constructions (fire resistant) set by the authorities. The carbonised layer gives protection to the core resulting in stability and predictability during a fire.

The glulam construction can therefore be made very fire resistent fulfilling the authority’s demands to fire rated constructions.
